Throughout this course I have learned that the nursing field requires well written academic writing. Nursing staff must write detail summaries of patient conditions and report that information to other departments relevant to the patient. For example, if a patient came into the emergency room seeking medical attention for a possible broken arm. Nursing staff would document patients current condition and any new changes while in the emergency room. These documents would then be passed on to other departments, like radiology and even physical therapy, in a form of communication. Another reason that communication is extremely important in the medical field is because if something isn’t documented then that procedure never happened. Any contact that medical staff have with a patient must be documented for legal reasons. If the documents are not correct the patient could sue the facility for medical error. These documents also play a huge roll in the laws of HIPAA. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) serves to protect patient privacy. In other words, anything that happens in medical facility must obey the laws set by HIPAA to protect patients medical records. If these laws are broken at any time legal actions are taken and the medical facility is at fault as well as the staff that attended that patient. First year english composition also plays a huge role in the medical field because we have a unique type of language. That language is developed primarily in the college setting whether it’s at an undergraduate university or medical school. My point being is that a person without medical training will understand what is happening in a medical facility. It takes a lot of work to be able to read doctors orders and then be able to simplify the doctors information and be able to explain it to a family member or the patient. I believe that the groundwork for medical language is formed during first year english composition because the course requires you to think outside of the box and really understand what is happening.
